If you have a remodeling project coming up and are struggling with the “custom vs off the shelf” dilemma, we’ve got some things to share with you to help you figure out which is best for your home or office. The word custom usually comes with scary images of giant checks paying for essentially the same thing you can get from the big box stores. Well, neither of those images are necessarily true. Custom doesn’t have to be expensive, it just means customized to your exact home. With this in mind, finding something that fits your home exactly from an off the shelf builder will be next to impossible! Here are a few reasons why custom is better!
USE ALL THE SPACE IN YOUR ROOM
Unless your home is exactly square with perfect right angles there’s little chance that anything that’s not custom is going to fit into your room without wasting a significant amount of space. One of our previous articles gets deeper into this subject. You can read it here.
FIT UNIQUE ITEMS
A 2012 article on Freshome.com points out that “Kitchens typically contain lots of stuff. Not only that, but items often concealed behind kitchen cabinets can be oddly shaped and require a lot of space, such as food processors or stand mixers. Finding a home for your appliances while keeping them easily accessible can be tricky.” If you have a large Kitchen Aid type mixer, or bread makers, etc., that take up a lot of space, you’ll need to find a way to conceal them while keeping them somewhat handy! Try that with an off the shelf solution!
MATCH YOUR EXISTING FINISHES
Unless you’re doing a complete remodel or building new construction, you’ll likely have to match your new cabinets with some existing cabinets. Doing this successfully is no easy trick! A 2015 article from KountryKraft.com points out that, “when adding custom cabinets to a room, there is a need to custom stain match the new cabinetry with existing cabinetry within the adjacent space.” A quality custom cabinet maker will ensure your new additions will fit perfectly into your existing décor!
